As you probably know, I am quite new to driving and currently, I am a learner driver. I love the feeling of freedom I get when I’m behind the wheel, but I am still quite a nervous driver, and I know that I have a lot to learn.
While learning to drive is a lot of fun, there are also times when it can be incredibly stressful, frustrating and nerve wracking. If you’re a learner driver, I am sure you will agree with me on this.
If, like me, you can’t wait for the day that your driving instructor finally says you have passed your test. Then you are probably keen to know all the secrets to learner driver success.
That’s why I have put together a simple guide to all the best secrets for learner drivers, as told by driving instructors. To find out more, keep reading below:
Don’t just focus on passing your driving test
While the only way to get your drivers license is to pass your driving test, it shouldn’t be the sole thing you focus on when learning to drive. It is important that as well as learning how to pass your driving test, that you also learn and develop skills to be a safe and responsible driver.
Get your theory test booked early
Get your theory test booked in as soon as possible. It might be an extra thing to worry about, but until you have passed your theory test, you can’t apply to do your driving test. So it is crucial that you get it booked in as soon as possible.
You can either book your theory test online or over the phone, whichever is easiest for you. Just remember, that when booking your theory test online, it is important to do so through a reliable website or company.
Don’t dwell on your mistakes
If you make a mistake during your driving lesson, don’t dwell on it. You are a learner; everyone makes mistakes - whatever you’ve done, it’s no big deal. Don’t spend the rest of the lesson worrying about it, move on and continue practicing.
The same goes for your test, if you make a mistake that you think has resulted in a fail, don’t dwell on it. Keep going and stay focused, you never know, you could still pass. And even if you don’t, at least it’s good practice for next time.
Choose your footwear carefully
It might sound odd, but make an effort to think about your footwear before going out for a driving lesson, is important. If you wear the wrong type of shoes to drive in, it can not only make learning to drive harder, but it can also make you a less safe driver.
Ideally, you want to be wearing shoes that have a thin sole and cover the whole foot, like pumps or trainers.
Ask yourself how you learn best
Each learner is different, as is each driving instructors teaching techniques. If you are struggling to learn properly with one driving instructor, try swapping instructors. You never know, you might get on better with the teaching methods of a different driving instructor.
Follow these simple tips and you should be a driving success in no time.
