LOVE...at LAST

It was the middle of February. She was wearing a pink satin gown, lipstick glowed on her lips and her hair flowed, curly on the tips and fluffy in the middle like clouds in a summer sky. She was walking along the corridor of their school. Music filled the air and everything felt surreal. The tic tac tic tac sound her heels made as she put one foot in front of the other made her smile. Today she was a princess and she was going to meet her prince at last!

He was putting his socks on, something his mom bought for him for this special day with the rest of his outfit. For the first time he was wearing a necktie and he felt grown up. He felt as if he finally knew what he wanted and he could do everything on his own that night. He was thinking of her as he stood, grabbed his suit and headed for their gate. He barely heard his mom say "take care sweetie," as he made his way to the alley that led to the school grounds adjacent to their house.

"We're the king and queen of hearts...." the phrase from a song greeted him as he saw flickering lights from the hall. He could not stop his heart from beating fast. He could not explain the excitement he felt as his eyes searched for that familiar other pair of eyes. "Hey you!" someone pat his shoulder and as he twisted his torso he saw her from the corner of his eyes. "Come on here bro! Look at us hahahaha!" the other boy grabbed his arm and led him to a corner of the room. They pulled each other's ties and tried to reach for each other's heads. "Man, we look cool don't we?!" the other boy was grinning from ear to ear and jumping up and down the gym's bleachers. He chuckled and laughed at the craziness of his best friend. As always he left his silly happy go lucky buddy who calls him " Jimjiminey" instead of simply Jim.

There she was, oh he could not stop himself from staring at her. Those eyes were like stars from above and when she smiled he almost could not catch his breath. What if, what if, what if she won't talk to me he asked himself for the nth time. "It's worth giving it a try right?" a voice inside him replied and he simply walked straight to where she was and held out his hand. "May I have this dance?" He could hardly hear his own voice, or did he even speak he wondered. She looked at him, just looked at him without blinking in fact he thought she wasn't even breathing as they gazed into each other's eyes. A melody played in his heart and he heard bells ringing. He shifted his gaze and the onslaught of emotions caught him unprepared for what she did. She put her right hand on his left shoulder and the left slid to his right hand. He imagined this moment every night in his room and now that it was happening he didn't know exactly what to do.

She saw him, walking to where she was. Indeed it was him, wearing a blue tie, hair glued to his head like the moon gracing the night. He found the courage at last she thought. She breathed in and out, in and out and felt a chill run through her spine. She couldn't explain what it was she was feeling. Excitement, fear, joy, it seemed as if the night was the last night of her life and she was ready to embrace death. Her aunts would always tell her that a boy's kiss was deadly and she was sure to die the first time she'd try. Then there he was asking her to dance with him. What was she supposed to do? "Come on this is the moment you've been waiting for!!!!" the friend beside her pushed her near him and she slid her left hand to his waiting right hand and her right hand made its way to his young yet broad shoulders.

And they danced...or did they simply stand there catching their breaths, wanting to be glued together forever. None of them spoke yet audibly they could hear the pounding of their chest louder than the speakers emanating from the four corners of the hall. He could smell the sweetness of her hair and she felt volts of electricity traveling down her spine. Is this what they call love?- their young hearts asked. As if on cue they started talking the same time and could not understand each other. The music was too loud and the lights too bright. He led her out of the room to the garden. The moon was shining brightly that night. The moonbeams found their way into their lips and it was all they could see on each other's face. They stood under a tree quietly, almost in worship. He moved closer to her. She didn't move a limb. An inch, a centimeter, then there was no space left between their faces. He felt the sky on his face as if he had wings. She couldn't believe it. She was dying. Yet she was not at all afraid. She wanted to die if this is how it felt to die. Their lips touched and everything around them seemed to have stopped. One second, two seconds, three, four they opened their eyes.It was real, they both were there and nothing else seemed to matter. It was the 14th of February and everyone was in love. They were, they knew they were......

The years went by and they struggled to attain their dreams....a degree, a career...a place in this world. It became harder to stay together in the process and somewhere along the way they lost each other. It was Heart's day again. He was on his way home from work unmindful of the hustle bustle and the merry making all around. Huge red hearts were on display everywhere. Flowers, chocolates and balloons were being sold in every corner of the city. A boy quite half his age approached him and begged him to buy three red roses. He looked at the roses, then at the boy. The boy smiled and quickly handed him the roses. Jim bought the roses unsure what he'd do with them. His mom has long been gone, a little after his graduation she died and he was left with younger brothers to look after. And yes it was then that family matters left him no time for Anne. Where was Anne now he wondered. He gazed at the clouds and remembered her curly hair a long time ago. He kept walking until he reached that park they used to visit. Was his mind playing tricks on him or was it truly her sitting on the bench talking to some kids. The lady raised her face and their eyes met. He heard music play somewhere from his chest and she smiled the sweetest of smiles...He handed her the roses, and stared at her forever...it was again the fourteenth of February and they were sure, very sure that LOVE found them again AT LAST....
