Childhood Memories...

I grew up chasing dragonflies and climbing trees. I loved playing with weeds, the ones with long green stalk we could split into two! A playmate and I would bet how the weed would be divided, into a square which we'd refer to as female or a straight line which we called male. The juice on the tip of leaves were oh so exciting to use as nail polish and the bubbles made of petal pulp and water were enough to make me giggle! We did not have digital toys but the world was so much fun running around on weekends under the early morning sun and playing hide-and-seek on full moons! I wish we had sleeping bags back then which we could use in the woods while camping and counting stars!

Prevent and Manage Child Asthma

Seeing a child struggling to catch a breath can make his parents anxious and worried. It is not easy for the doting parents to see their child living under a constant threat of getting next asthma attack.

Asthma is condition that arises due to the tightness of lungs which obstructs the normal airflow passage. It is accompanied with various clinical symptoms like trouble breathing, coughing, wheezing and breath shortness. It is an incurable disease which can be controlled by using long term and short term medications.

What are the causes of asthma?

From past few years, asthma has tremendously increased in children. There are many factors that make the children susceptible to asthma:

  • Rising pollution induced by diesel fuel cars and buses are causing allergic conditions like asthma
  • Environmental irritants like chlorinated water of swimming pool,  pollen, dust mites and animal dander also induces asthma allergy
  • Chemical irritants like fragrance powder, soaps, cosmetic products and air fresheners can cause asthma attack
  • Raising up of children in a sterile environment makes their immunity compromised and they become oversensitive
  • Overweight and lack of activity also raises the inflammation in the body and causes asthma
  • Eczema is an allergic skin condition that characterized by the itchy, red and swollen skin which further invites various sorts of microorganisms. Many studies have revealed that children who have eczema are at higher risk of developing asthma.

How one can manage asthma?

It is very important for the parents to recognize and take preventive measures in order to prevent asthma or asthma attack in future. Regular monitoring of the children’s health status is must and don’t even neglect the single clinical symptom. The following steps can really bring a lot of difference:

  •          Clean house regularly and wear mask while doing that
  •          Change your bed sheets and pillow covers regularly
  •          Proper air ventilation, clean air ducts and AC systems that keeps your house mold free
  •     Keep pets out of the bedrooms and sleeping areas. Regular wash and do vacuum cleaning of interior surfaces
  •    Follow your lung function by using peak flow meter as it decreases before asthma symptoms and clearly shows that asthma attack is on the way
  •   Managing asthma with the help of therapeutic drugs.  There are wide array of therapeutic drugs that helps in preventing asthma attack. Long term and quick relief medications as the name suggest that former one is taken on the daily basis to keep inflammation at a bay. It reduces or eliminates asthma flare ups. The latter one is taken when needed in emergency to open the constricted airways. There are many drugs given in the management of asthma. Serevent Diskus 50mcg contains one active ingredient Salmeterol Xinafoate and it is a long beta 2 receptor agonist and relaxes the smooth muscles, thus dilates the constricted bronchioles. Salmeterol is a potent and has long lasting effects. It inhibits the histamine, Leukotriene and prostaglandin D2 inflammatory mediators in lungs. It keeps the muscles around the lungs airways in a relaxed state and avoids symptoms of Asthma such as wheezing and shortness of breath.

Dhos, My Young Musician Friend

Meet my musician friend Dhos on one of his musical adventures. With him cheering on is his little bro Tres and mom Shiela. They are now based in Canada and I miss these little boys' giggles and cute chinky eyes.

I am such a fan of kids who can play music! Having nil talent in producing melody it amazes me how young ones could strum a guitar, hit cheap pearl drum, hold a microphone and sing songs of praise and love.

My Teenage Son's Plea for A Fender Mustang On Sale

My teenage son has been playing the guitar through his smartphone. I never even thought there'd be an application for playing music with one's phone and I was not surprised one morning when he asked me whether I could purchase one of those fender mustang for sale  he learned of online. I smiled, scratched my head, looked at him who was raising his eyebrows and giving me his signature  "mommy please say yes" facial expression. He has remained on top of his class for the past semesters and his dad and I are super proud of his exemplary achievements in school that I don't think we could ever say no to music being played inside the house with only the best guitar model and guitar amplifier in the market. So, without all the fuss and the drama, I said YES, fender mustang you will have! My motherly heart knows my son dreams of being a rockstar someday and I could only smile for now at the thought. Rockstar or just a trying hard music player I love him with all my heart and soul.
