Personally, I’d make a frame first and then spend some time designing the contents. Perhaps you might like to cut a flower out using a jigsaw and glue it into the centre of your frame. While you might be able to buy shelves relatively cheaply these days, the budget options are usually very plain and boring, which is why making your own could be ideal. All you need is some planks of wood and a decent saw. Firstly, cut the wood to size and then use the remaining material to decorate the front overhang in your own personal design. Some people like to engrave the wood using chisels and similar tools.

So, spending some extra time on making your coffee table to ensure it looks really smart is almost certainly a wise move.
