Look After Your Baby's Skin With These Skincare Tips

One of the best things about a newborn baby is how good they smell and how soft their skin is. Babies skin is so delicate and sensitive and needs appropriate care and attention to be looked after properly. Dyes in clothing, harsh detergents and perfumes can cause newborns skin to become dry and irritable. If their skin is not looked after this can cause rashing and even scarring in some cases. It’s vital to your baby’s development that you touch their skin as it soothes them and makes them feel loved. There are things you can do to prevent any harm to their delicate skin, follow these gentle skincare tips to find out more.

Don’t use baby products initially

There is no need for you to use baby products for the first few months of your baby’s life. The chemicals found in these products can cause allergic reactions and rashes. The first few months are when your baby’s immune system is still building itself up, and their skin won’t heal as quickly as it should. Also, consider if you or other members of your family suffer from allergies or asthma. These traits could have been passed down to your baby and the irritable elements in baby products can cause attacks and breakouts. Avoid this from happening by avoiding anything that could irritate your baby’s skin.

Think about what they are wearing

It’s vital that you wash all of your baby’s clothes with baby safe detergents that are both dye and fragrance-free. This should be done before the baby wears the clothing. Again harmful chemical can get into the fibres of the clothing and irritate their skin. Keep the rest of your family’s washing separated from your baby’s and remember to rinse multiple times and to allow plenty of time to dry. Think about the blankets and towels that you use to wrap your baby up in too. Some options are too rough and can scratch the skin that can be painful for you baby. Consider buying soft, organic baby blankets and towels to wrap your baby in for some additional protection.

Don’t bathe your baby too frequently

Babies can get messy. That’s a fact. But we must resist the urge to bathe them too often as this can dry out their skin. This will make it more susceptible to crack and cause eczema. Too much exposure to water will remove the valuable oils that protect the skin, making it, even more, vulnerable. A recommended amount is two or three times a week. This should keep them clean and healthy without causing the skin to dry out. In between you can just cleansing baby wipes. But ensure they are gentle and chemical free. Remember not to leave your child unattended during their bath and don’t leave them in the water for extended periods of time.

Protecting your baby’s skin now can make an enormous difference to their lives later on. It can even prevent them for developing skin conditions as they age. Stick to a sensible bathing and washing regime and your baby will have soft and healthy skin always.

  1. My 7 month old still falls asleep while nursing even if she’s slept! We are finally fixing her nap schedule and that’s definitely helping, but most of the time she falls asleep nursing. She’s eating every 3.5-4 hours during the day (and then closer together in the early afternoon and evening before bed) but only naps an hour to an hour and a half (up from 20 minutes!) so sometimes food comes at an odd time. Hard to keep her awake!
