How To Enjoy A Family Stargazing Night

Stargazing might be the last thing that you think about doing on a winter’s evening. However, trust me when I say that it is one of the most amazing, fun-filled family nights that you’ll ever have. I’m a huge fan of stargazing and of the stars, in general. The way they look, our star signs and the constellations. My daughter and I often spend hours outside in our garden in the summer, just gazing upwards and chatting about our day.

There is no good reason why this can’t be done in the winter as well. If you are stuck for something to do one evening then get the family together and give stargazing a try. You might be surprised at just how much everyone enjoys the experience.

Why stargazing? Stargazing is one of the most spectacular sights in the world. Who wouldn’t want to open their eyes and just take in the beautiful sights that surround them every single night? The night sky is filled with beautiful sights that can keep your family entertained for hours. Once you start stargazing, you’ll wish you did it sooner!

How to stargaze? Stargazing is quite simple. Just wait for a clear night when there aren’t many clouds in the sky. Wait until it gets fully dark and ensure that there is no full moon as the light from this will obstruct your view. Gather the family together and set up the garden furniture in a good spot where you can all lay with your heads tilted back. A lot of people ask where they should look. The simple answer is just to fill your gaze with as much of the night sky as possible and relax. You can get your bearings by finding a few key points such as the North star or Vega. These are very bright stars that shine in the night sky. Once you know where these are, you can learn the rest of the constellations. A fun way to get children and adults involved in this activity is to allow them to name a star. This is a beautiful and thoughtful way to show someone how much you care or to encourage a first-time stargazer.

What will you need? Once you have found your prime stargazing spot, you will need a few basic things. Firstly you should make some nice hot tea or hot chocolate and pour it into a flask.  This will ensure that you all have hot drinks to hand. These are perfect for keeping you warm and hydrated while you stargaze. Next, ensure that you have warm gloves and blankets. It is important not to let the younger family members get too cold if you are stargazing during winter. Comfortable chairs are a bonus, but you can always bring your own cushions and blankets and lay on the garden grass if you have a good view from there.

You need very little in order to have a beautiful evening show, courtesy of mother nature herself. Enjoy it and take it all in for free.
