The hot weather, beautiful landscapes and laid-back lifestyle are some of the reasons why many couples choose to get married in Australia. If you are thinking about having your forthcoming nuptials down under, here are the answers to some questions you may have.

What are the legal requirements?

You do not have to be resident in Australia to be married there. Therefore, this makes it very easy for couples to get married in this country.

Before you can be legally wed in Australia, both partners must sign a document declaring that there is no legal impediment to the marriage.

Both partners must be over 18 before the wedding ceremony takes place in Australia. If you and your partner are over 16, but under 18, you must first gain parental permission and court order before you can be married.

Before you arrive in Australia, you will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authority visa. With this visa, you can legally stay within the country for up to 90 days.

Who will marry us?

Marriages in Australia must be carried out by a Celebrant. There are three types of Celebrant; a religious minister, a civil celebrant and state officer. You can have either a religious or civil ceremony.

Where can I get married?

You can hold your ceremony pretty much anywhere! You can get married in a Church or Registry Office, but you can also hold the ceremony on a beach or in a park. You should discuss your preferred location with the Celebrant first, especially if it is somewhere obscure.

How many witnesses are required?

You will need two witnesses present at the ceremony. Apart from the Celebrant, anyone can act as a witness to the nuptials, as long as they are over the age of 18.

What information will I need to marry in Australia?

You must lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month and one day before your ceremony with the Celebrant. This form can be obtained from the Celebrant, or you can download the form online.

The Notice must be signed in the presence of either Notary Public or an Australian Consular Officer.

Can I organise the wedding from home?

Yes, with the power of the internet, it is possible to entirely plan your wedding online. Many wedding related businesses have a website and online payment options. For example, www.bettapartyhire.com.au hires out marquees, dance floors and furniture.

It is a good idea to research weddings in Australia online as you are bound to come across advice and tips from other foreign couples that have wed down under.

You should also contact a trustworthy wedding planner in Australia, who can take care of the smaller details of your big day. The wedding planner will be able to do all the things that you are unable to do from a distance, like scope out venues and taste the wedding menu.

Australia is a beautiful country with exceptionally charming landscapes. As you will have gathered from this information, it is quite simple for foreigners to get married in this country. If you have your heart set on a warm, beach wedding then Australia is an excellent option!
