Confessions of a Camera Addict

This is a long overdue post  which has been sleeping in my drafts for more than a month now. As I type I still am having second thoughts as to whether to go on with this entry or simply hit close and forget all about it. My journey through that thing called photography is yet to commence. For the past two years I have been using a point and shoot camera to capture images and simply been relying on the tips I get from looking at the images taken by my pro friends. I must admit it is addicting though I still have so much to learn...still just a trying hard hobbyist.  I have this "itch to click" that even in my slumber I am holding a cam. The passion started when I met friends on line  who had photo-blogs.

self-photography sometime in 2010

Back then I simply used images I found on Google to embellish my published thoughts. I considered even a point and shoot camera as a luxury and relied on my low end cellphone's lens to take images.

When I still had no cellphone with a camera I used to borrow my hubby's phone and then edited my poor shots using a variety of photo editing software. Then a cousin generously gave me her old digital camera which totally rocked my world. At first I was obsessed with taking photos of myself, setting up the cam's timer while keeping it still on an old tripod I found somewhere in our old closets then rushing to take a pose always laughing at myself in the process for the craziness.

my old sony cyber-shot barely 4.1 mega pixels DSC-P73 a hand me down toy from a sweet cousin

...and then I gradually got tired of merely capturing myself and realized the real beauty of it all is staying behind the cam and capturing God's wonderful creation as inspired by friends' Joys of Simple Life,
Sweet Memoirs and Refuge Online and being able to help build and sustain other people's dreams through blogging for a cause like what we do at our group blog The Salitype Society where you could also be inspired to sponsor a child's education.

...and so I spread my wings photography wise...finally got to convince myself to buy my first DSLR after what seemed like an endless debate with myself because I felt guilty buying a thing which I merely wanted but not truly needed when so many people can't even manage to eat three meals a day...in the end rationalization and that phrase that states we need to also love ourselves took over my frugality and I purchased the cheapest model I saw and moving fast forward I found myself joining  the 5th Annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk  which I learned of through browsing the photos of a fellow photo enthusiasts friend on a social networking site.

It was so exciting to meet professional photographers in our locality and to be watching them do what they do best. As for me, having the chance to capture images of ships in the area was already enough to scratch the itch.

...oh and watching fellow addicts to their magical tricks :)

I just kept shooting here and there enjoying the awesome feeling of playing with a toy for big kids.

then I saw him....sitting in a corner of the pier, with clasped hands...no shoes or even slippers pensively looking out into the ocean teaching me a lesson not often taught in the classroom...I took a hurried snap and walked on...perhaps I should not have just walked on but sat beside him AND FOR A MOMENT OR TWO I COULD HAVE MADE HIM SMILE....I know though that there are so many others who share his plight out there whose stories I could listen to and perhaps merely that could make a difference....

After the walk a sumptuous free meal from the most generous of sponsors waited for us and that totally convinced me to join again next year :)

with photo-walking buddy Junaz who makes me feel young at heart :)
with a former college school paper buddy, now a professional landscape photographer whose name
appears in the magazine below...super proud of you bro!

  20. Camera can sometimes very addictive. I have my first camera when I was in college. By that time wala pang digicam puro film pa lang but I really enjoyed it.

Now that I am blogging, I've been dreaming to own a DSLR camera as well for the reason that I want to share great photos to my readers and capture great moments with family and friends.

Congratulations on your DSLR cam sis and may you continue to share beautiful photos with us.
