Hoarder Overhaul!

Let’s be honest.  We are all guilty of hoarding something.  Whether it is letters from old friends, photographs from our relatives or even a collection of cabbage patch dolls.  Our homes are filling up and, as the saying goes, an untidy home leads to an untidy mind.

Unless you have the biggest house on earth, chances are you are losing valuable space for the things you really need and use.  Perhaps you have a garage so full of boxes that you can’t get your car in their anymore.  If that doesn’t bother you because you prefer your car on the drive, then perhaps you could consider how a garage conversion could create you a rentable space which could help cover the costs of your bills or give you an extra area for when friends and family come over.  Your boxes of unused items may seem pretty harmless sitting their out of the way, but when you consider the alternative uses for the space they take up, you could find you are missing out on financial opportunity.

So, where do you start and how do you keep on top of your hoarding habits? Let’s take a look.

One of the best areas to start is your wardrobe, or should we say, extended wardrobe.  After children or as we age, our bodies change shape and size.  We may think that our favourite dresses or trousers will fit us again on day, but the chances are they really won’t.  This isn’t to say you can’t get back down to the dress size you were in your twenties, however it may be that you aren’t the same shape.  Also, times change, so unless you have some incredible designer pieces you probably won’t find that you adore that cute 90’s cocktail dress, quite as much.  Be brutal.  Anything that you haven’t worn for 6 months should go into your home storage.  If you still haven’t worn it for 6 months once it is out of your wardrobe, it’s time to say goodbye.  Either by sending it off to a charity shop or by reusing the material.  However there are only so many cleaning rags one person needs.  So don’t just fill another box.

Another area we tend to hoard is old furniture.  Maybe you are moving homes and have been offered furniture you love but you can’t fit it into your current home.  Ship that out of your garage and straight into a company such as Canning Vale Storage Units.  Storage rates are pretty reasonable and give you access and security, meaning you can make the most of your space at home whilst knowing you haven’t had to throw away any bargains you have managed to pick up.

Start today and make a little time to maximise the space you have.  You will give yourself more room to enjoy at home and find you feel lighter in your mind.  You may also discover that you have enough room for a home office or a little extra accommodation.
