When you have your first child, your life will change forever. My partner and I found that our lives changed loads when we had our little ones. It is hard to imagine what being a mom entails until you have a kid. Before that, you might have ideas about parenting, but you will not know the first thing about dealing with real life children. For most women, raising a child is a learning curve. You have to try different things to see what works for you and your family. Here are some easy parenting tips that every mom should know.
1. Set boundaries for your kids
Every child needs boundaries and rules. You might think that your child will understand right from wrong, but how can they if you never tell them? I have found that it is super important to show your kids what is acceptable and what is not. When your kids break the rules, you need to let them know straight away. Children have short attention spans, and so you need to discipline them the instant something happens.
2. Take an interest in their activities
Every child has an individual set of interests. You need to make sure that you involve yourself in your kids' hobbies. For example, if your son is part of a football team, you should ensure that you show up to watch his games. It doesn't matter whether you like football or not. What matters is that you are there for your child when he needs you the most. Supporting your kids will boost their confidence and make them happy.
3. Make time for your faith
If you are a spiritual person, you need to share this aspect of your life with your kids. Sometimes, that means that you need to take them along to meetings with you. Join a child-friendly church, such as the Harvest Family Church and attend on a regular basis. Children learn about faith from their parents. If you don't take the time to share your beliefs with your kids, they will not have a religion at all.
4. Be consistent in your parenting style
When you are a mom, you need to make sure that you are consistent in your parenting style. You will confuse your children if you don't always act the same around them. If you are strict one day and easygoing the next, this will upset your kids. They will not know what to expect from you on a day to day basis. If you want respect from your children, you need to control your moods and stay cool.
5. Never lose control or scream
While we are on the subject of controlling yourself, let's talk about the times when you (almost) lose control. If your children are naughty, you need to stay calm. Sure, they might be yelling and doing awful things, but you are the adult in this situation. If you yell back at your kids, they will lose respect for you and treat you as they would other children. Instead, you need to keep hold of the control by staying calm. Talk to your kids in an authoritative tone and tell them to behave themselves.
6. Trust your instincts
The best piece of advice I can give other mothers is that you need to trust your instincts. There are loads of books, blogs and magazines out there that can give you help, but you need to trust your feelings. Over time, you will know what the right thing to is in each situation. You should listen to all the advice you get, but at the end of the day only you can know what is right for your kids.
