How To: Moving Large Furniture Items

Moving from one home to the next, if by choice, is usually an exciting time in a person’s life. It sometimes means moving up and upgrading or moving to a new, thrilling destination. If you’re moving to a new home in Boston, or you’re moving to a new home in San Francisco, chances are you’ll need to employ some awesome moving hacks or at least hire the best Boston movers or San Francisco movers to do the hacks for you. Besides, moving in either busy city can be a feat in and of itself. However, no matter your end destination, lugging big furniture items from point “A” to point “B” will definitely require creative problem solving and muscles, of course.

Moving Rugs Depending on the rug size and rug material, it’s important to practice care when preparing a rug for storage. Using improper techniques will destroy the rug material, leaving you with ugly, irreparable damages. First, you must know to never, ever, not even once consider folding large area rugs. This can prove especially damaging for grass rugs or natural fiber rugs like sisal or jute because once the fibers bend, they’re weakened and may express permanent creases. Roll up the rug instead:

  • ~Flip the rug on its top
  • ~Place a large blanket along the upward facing bottom
  • ~Roll the rug with the bottom toward the inside (prevents damages to the bottom)
  • ~If storing for a long period of time, wrap the rug in plastic or some other covering

Moving Big Furniture & Bulky Items Moving big pieces of furniture is tough and even hazardous, especially when navigating through narrow hallways and skinny doors. Before you start flexing and heaving, make sure you fully think through your preferred moving method. Also, if the furniture or bulky item could be damaged easily (i.e. leather couch or thin television screens) wrap it in bubble wrap, a blanket or other protective material. If the item is used to store other gear (i.e. dressers, desks) remove the contents and shelves. Store the contents in the same box and label them for easy replacement. For large items with legs, place pieces of cardboard below each leg. Pushing and pulling should be option number one before moving to lifting. Sliding furniture allows the navigator(s) more control and creates less strain on the mover’s body. In some cases, the furniture item’s width could exceed the doorway width. If it’s been years since you last moved a couch out of a room or have since remodeled, this could be a potential problem. Many furniture pieces have removable peg-legs. Removing said pegs will grant you a few extra inches of space when trying to play Tetris with your gear. Furthermore, always try to tilt and angle longer furniture items as you don’t want to drag them against the doorframe.

  2. Good thing we don't have huge area rugs because I will surely just roll them up without any protection at all. LOL. Thanks for the tip. For 5 years we've been moving from one apartment to another and now we have our own place. I though I wouldn't need to move furnitures, but I think I just love rearranging them included our dresses! OMG! I was able to move things alone - sofa, the whole bed set, cabinets.
