Sunsets and Moonlights II

Sand crept to the soles of her feet, between her toes and water caressed and tickled those parts. It was warm, the water felt warm as she bowed and cupped them with her palms. She let the liquid escape through gapes in her fingers and she giggled. She saw a tiny fish making its way inside a rock. She took a step towards the part of the shore where seaweeds were exposed by the low tide. She wiped her hands at the back of her shirt and grabbed the cam hanging on her neck. She looked into a tiny hole and snap she did as she tried to chase the water kissing the rocks. The sun was about to sink into the ocean and she could feel the warm glow of the sun magnified a hundred times over the waters.

The sky was turning orange into pink. It all felt surreal. He was there right beside her clicking his cam. He was staring at the sun all aglow! This was what they wished for a long time ago. To watch the sunset together...even just one sunset, one lovely sun-setting. Each was oblivious to the tide. She gathered the strands of her hair that escaped to brush her face as she stood and left his side. She longed to take a closer shot of the gigantic ball of light and have it flown in an enchanting merry harmony with the leaves and stones. He followed her and kept still as he watched her every movement only looking away when her gaze came to his direction. She still looked the same he mused. She must have read his thoughts, she looked towards him and smiled. That smile he used to answer with "iloveyou," and a double wink. He tried so hard to stop himself but he couldn't. He winked but she blinked and didn't see it. Thank God he uttered. His heart was beating so fast he thought his chest would break apart. How could life be so tricky? How could time be such a tease. He knew the right time was not today. Everything seemed so beautiful but he must wait. True love waits he always believed it does and believing kept him strong to that day.

Darkness was slowly creeping into the woods, the sand and the sky. The moonlight was inviting and they both looked above. There was the moon, smiling at them. Was it a sign? Was it another of those messages from above? They didn't know the answer yet they were willing to wait. She smiled at him again and he winked. This time she saw it and managed to say, "hey, so this is goodbye yet again?" He couldn't get himself to reply at once and had to clear his throat. As always he was too shy, too fearful to ask her to stay. "Can you please just stay a little longer?" he couldn't believe he said. She lurched towards him and held him in a tight embrace. "I waited a lifetime for you to say that to me!" He didn't know what to do. He stroked her hair at first and then his hands crept to her nape and managed to find their way into her face. He held the face he has adored for years. The lines of memories and pain were vivid in them. He kissed her forehead and they laughed. "How long have we waited?" she cried in between bursts of laughter. They both were crying and laughing at the same time. It felt crazy and it was crazy they knew.

He put his arms around her shoulders and they walked along the shore like long lost lovers finding the right path at last. He hummed and she hummed. They skipped and ran and played with the waves until they felt too tired. She was gasping as they sat. She smiled at him, then cried. "I don't know how to say this," "what is it?" he asked. "I...I ..I have to go..." It isn't you, it is us being together, you know we can't be together right?" He was surprised that he smiled and didn't shed a tear as he replied.

"How could I ask for more?" "You are with me each time the sun sets and each night we both are looking at the same moon, I can never be too greedy to want to have all of you because I LOVE YOU SO MUCH... it is enough for me to just have a part of you with me even on only two moments of each day."

She cried as he grabbed her into his arms and ran his hands in a steady back and forth rhythm on her back. They didn't know how long the embrace lasted but it felt too brief, too fleeting. She looked one last time at him and kissed the palm of his hand.... waved at him as she slowly disappeared in the crowd. He wept, wept until all tears ran dry and then looked up the sky. The moon was shining so radiantly his heart skipped a beat. He knew right wherever she was, she was staring at the same moon and for now, that was all that mattered....he smiled....somewhere under the same sky, she too smiled....
