August

The sun caught a part of his eyes. He was chasing its rays, wanting them to touch the letter I l, o, v and e on the phrase he wrote on the sand. He was thinking of her, as always as he watched the majestic ball kissing the ocean. Where was she? Has she forgotten? It's been such a long time. Yet the pain remains, the pain of losing her in this lifetime. People ask him, all the time why he has not yet settled down. He would just shrug off the query, smile and say "well, it is great to be single and free"! People never saw the sadness. He always kept smiling. If there is anything he does best, it's hiding his feelings. But not to her, no not to her, he could never hide what he was feeling from her. One look from her eyes and he's totally caught in the web of a feeling that has kept haunting him through the years. Yet where was she? Today was the date they saved on their hearts a long time ago. Where was she? has she forgotten? The sun settled beneath the world and he was left wondering to himself, hugging himself and crying out silently talking to the sand, the stones, the water caressing his feet. Maybe next hear he quipped. Maybe next year, she will be here. He said that the other year and he kept saying it through the years and left the shore with heavy shoulders and sagging cheeks.

She managed to get there, at twilight five years after. Her heart was throbbing, aching to see his smile. The familiar gentle angling of his feet walking along the shore. She was about to run to him when she saw a shadow creep beside him, hugged him from behind and whose hands he instantly held to his and walked on towards the cottages. She could not fathom the anguish that blew her heart into pieces. She stood there, for several minutes until her knees could no longer hold her grieving soul's weight and she sat on sand, allowing her elbows to make her hands close in on her face, making way for the tears to fall. So he has moved on? What happened to forevermore? Perhaps he got tired waiting and finally found his own sunset.  It was her fault she knew. It was her who gave up on them years ago. So what kept her hoping he'd change his mind? She did not know. She just knew that one day, that every first day of August she will be there, waiting....yet time, and life had other plans...life was not too good to her and she lived one lonely August after August until she almost forgot....While he lived a life regretting he ever let go for the second time, changed his mind and chose to be single and waiting forevermore...AND TIME FLEW...

She was tossing and turning in bed. Something wasn't right. She just knew something special was happening that day. But what was it? All the stress of daily life must have taken a toll on her dwindling memory. Her knees ached from swelling and her eyes could hardly recognize the date written on the calendar. August....August...so what if it is August? Something ached inside her chest. It was a longing she could not a put a name to.  August! August! It is August! She suddenly remembered! She hurried out of the door with her cane, gently kissing a grandson's cheeks.

He was there! Goodness, the old man was there! Or was it him? She almost tripped as she dragged her right foot after her cane digging on sand. He was writing the same words on the wet sand, waiting for the sun's rays to illuminate them and bring magic to the words..." I LOVE YOU YORE"....the letters looked crooked now that his hands were calloused and shaking, he was concentrating on looking at the words as always as Yore touched his hands. He recognized the hands at once, nothing changed, they were still wet from perspiration, it could only be her! He turned his head and saw her, lovelier through the years, her eyes never changed, though her lips were now cracked and pale his heart still longed to hold her in his arms and tell her of his dreams. Tears were rolling from their cheeks and they felt stupid, and old, and happy at the same time. "So is this our happy ending?" he said in between sobs to which she replied, "I guess it is August, I guess this is it."...."I love you," "I love you toooo"....the sun found its way into the sea, first day of August..........their 70th birthday...
